Skanska solves technical challenges and saves money at the new Slussen project in Stockholm

Skanska has been able to save significant amounts of material and money by testing all the mechanical aspects virtually throughout the construction work.

Slussen, an important transport hub in Stockholm, is worn out after 80 year and needs to be pulled down and rebuilt from the ground up. Skanska has been commissioned to supply two 35 m wide discharge gates that regulate the water level in Lake Mälaren and create a beautiful water surface for visitors. The requirements for function and advanced technical solutions are high as the water flows in Lake Mälaren vary greatly over the year, and because the lake supplies drinking water to more than 2 million inhabitants. There are also stringent safety requirements, as many people circulate in the area every day.

“Using simulations for stress (FEM) and flow (CFD), we have been able to save significant amounts of material and money. It is a huge advantage to be able to test all the mechanical aspects virtually throughout the construction work to ensure functionality, strength and safety,” explains Pertti Johansson, Group Manager Mechanics, Skanska Teknik.
