BRUSH Electrical Machines will adopt Sovelia, a Lean PLM solution from Symetri. The company decided to invest in Sovelia as it provides BRUSH with a single, central source from which to share the required Design Data across their business. Sovelia provides BRUSH with a “single source of truth” relating to the data around the Design upon which they can rely.
The company specialise in the supply of generators for the provision of “off-grid” power generation. Designs are based around a detailed and structured Bill-of-Materials which drives their business systems across the company. Items with long lead times need to be designed early so that they can be ordered early in the process. The detail around the Design is then built as needed over time.
“The challenge for us was to find a replacement for our existing, homegrown PDM system which would allow us to continue to share the structure of BoM and all of the associated data around the business and to integrate it into our disparate business systems. Essential to that process is that users across the business have secure and reliable access to the right information, in the format that they need it, when it is required. Originating from our team of around 20 designers, the data must be available to ‘consumers’ in Europe, USA, Far East, Middle East and Australasia,” tells Gareth Williams, IT Manager from BRUSH on the company’s current challenges which Sovelia will support to solve.
BRUSH have used Autodesk Inventor since 2010, with the associated data managed using Autodesk Vault Professional. Links into their ERP were developed to ensure the Design and Manufacturing data were properly sychronised. Metadata and associated quality and process documentation around the Design had been shared across the business using a legacy data management tool.
Over time, improved systems have become available, and in parallel with this BRUSH have sought to improve their infrastructure. Sovelia provides the framework to distribute the data in the right format to each user and to share it into multiple and changing business systems.
Sovelia is a lean PLM application created by Symetri to share and integrate the data about the Design across the business, based on configured templates to address core functionality and developed using a best practice approach. In this case Sovelia is integrated with Autodesk Vault Professional to manage the Design data from Inventor and AutoCAD Electrical. Sovelia is however independent of the Design and PDM source so can be used to manage data from alternative systems including SolidWorks, Catia and Creo.
