ISO 19650 Accreditation and Certification

What Is ISO 19650?

ISO 19650 is the international standard for managing information using Building Information Modelling (BIM).
It builds on the foundations of BIM Level 2, providing a unified framework to improve collaboration, efficiency, and data management across every stage of a project.

Symetri supports organisations at every step from understanding the ISO 19650 standards to achieving full accreditation — in partnership with LRQA, a UKAS-accredited certification body.

ISO 19650 vs BIM Level 2 vs ISO 9001

ISO 19650 evolved directly from the UK’s BIM Level 2 framework, taking its core concepts, such as common data environments, standardised information exchange, and collaborative workflows and translating them into an internationally applicable standard. While BIM Level 2 established the procedural and technical foundations for managing project information, ISO 19650 broadens this by embedding consistent governance, responsibilities, and lifecycle information management across global projects. It also aligns naturally with ISO 9001 principles, emphasising process standardisation, documented procedures, clear roles, continual improvement, and evidence-based decision-making. Together, they support reliable, repeatable, and quality-driven management of built-asset information.

ISO 9001

  • Focus: Quality Management
  • Applies to: All industries
  • Key Benefit: Process consistency and quality assurance

BIM Level 2

  • Focus: Digital Collaboration (UK legacy)
  • Applies to: UK construction
  • Key Benefit: Structured data exchange framework

ISO 19650

  • Focus: Global BIM Information Management
  • Applies to: Built environment
  • Key Benefit: Unified, internationally recognised BIM process

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

ISO 19650 is an international standard that defines the processes and principles for managing information over the whole life cycle of a built asset using Building Information Modelling (BIM). It provides a framework for collaborative information management in construction and asset operations.

The ISO 19650 series currently includes the following parts:

  • ISO 19650-1: Concepts and principles

  • ISO 19650-2: Delivery phase of the assets

  • ISO 19650-3: Operational phase of the assets

  • ISO 19650-4: Information exchange

  • ISO 19650-5: Security-minded approach to information management

Together, these parts support the efficient management of information from design to decommissioning.

Not exactly. ISO 19650 builds upon the principles of UK BIM Level 2 but aligns them to an international standard. It essentially internationalises and updates the UK BIM Level 2 framework to provide consistent global best practices.

  • ISO 19650 focuses on information management within BIM processes for construction and asset management projects.

  • ISO 9001 is a broader quality management system (QMS) standard that ensures consistent quality in products and services across any industry.
While both aim to improve efficiency and consistency, ISO 19650 specifically applies to BIM and built asset information.

It depends on the country and the specific tender requirements. In some regions (like the UK), government projects may require compliance with ISO 19650 principles, but formal certification is not always mandatory. However, demonstrating compliance can significantly strengthen your bid.

The timeline varies based on your organisation’s readiness, size, and existing information management practices. Typically, it can take 3 to 12 months to achieve certification, including preparation, implementation, and the external audit process.

Certification can be provided by accredited third-party certification bodies, such as:

  • BSI (British Standards Institution)

  • LRQA
